Disoriented

This p5.js project uses a camera, mouse, and microphone to simulate the cognitive world of Alzheimer’s patients. Face recognition captures users’ movements for real-time interaction, while mouse exploration reveals distorted scenes reflecting memory loss and sensory confusion. The microphone mimics delayed responses, recreating patients’ disorientation. Through visual and auditory disruptions, the project aims to promote empathy and raise awareness for Alzheimer’s patients.

Introduction

Video synopsis

I am an Alzheimer’s patient, living alone. Each day feels like a foggy haze. This morning, I woke up wanting to make myself breakfast, but I couldn’t even distinguish the spice jars. Frustrated, I went back to my room to read the newspaper, only to find that the words were incomprehensible, like a foreign language. When I went to the bathroom and looked into the mirror, I saw a stranger staring back—I couldn’t recognize my own face. Hoping to calm myself, I decided to take a walk in the park. Yet even in broad daylight, it felt as if night had fallen, and fear crept into my heart. My memories slip away like sand through my fingers, and everything that was once familiar now feels distant and unfamiliar. This confusion and fear is the life I must endure, over and over, every single day…
